Tomas Maier is having a birthday.
His eponymous collection will fête its 10th anniversary with the delivery in stores this November of his cruise collection for 2007-08.
The collection features many “best of” styles from his iconic swimwear collections as well as his leisure time inspiring knits and jerseys.
The Tomas Maier fashion company was founded in Miami Beach, Florida, in 1997. Ten years later, the Tomas Maier collection is sold in more than 30 countries at over 100 stores around the world. An online boutique was launched in 1998.
A self-named store opened in Miami Beach in 2003 that celebrates the Florida lifestyle – and features products catering to those who pass through or make their homes in the tropical climate.
The versatility and ease of the Tomas Maier collection reflect the taste and personal experience of the designer, a man in perpetual motion. Born and raised in Germany, Maier received his design education in Paris, training at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture and the haute couture atelier of Guy Laroche. He has worked as a designer for luxury fashion houses for more than two decades, spending nine years designing women’s wear at Hermès, eight years designing men’s wear at Sonia Rykiel, and four years as the creative director of Revillon. In addition to overseeing his own line, he is currently the creative director of the Italian luxury leather-goods house Bottega Veneta, based in Milan, having joined the Gucci Group in 2001. Mr. Maier currently resides in Palm Beach, Florida.

the store
This fall, the first Tomas Maier boutique will open its doors to the public. The store, a long-held dream for designer Tomas Maier and partner Andrew Preston, will feature the Tomas Maier collection as well as a changing selection of iconic products from designers and manufacturers around the world. In both design and execution, the boutique embodies the design philosophy of the Tomas Maier collection: luxury, comfort, and an intimate, low-key sophistication.
The boutique will be housed in a 1930s Mediterranean-style apartment building on the corner of 18th Street and West Avenue, in the Sunset Harbor neighborhood of Miami Beach. The bold choice of venue, in an industrial area best known for auto body shops and the Bee Gee’s former recording studio, has Maier and Preston excited. “It’s always been one of my favorite neighborhoods,” says Maier. “The only other store here is a Publix supermarket, an interesting building designed by the architect Carlos Zapata. I think the possibility exists to create a real neighborhood here, an area with character like those you find in New York or Paris. I want to bring that to Miami.”
To present a complete lifestyle environment, Maier and Preston connected several adjacent buildings to create a series of interrelated showcases. A visitor strolling from room to room will find men’s and women’s ready-to-wear, accessories, objects for the home, entertainment, and a café serving a changing menu of seasonal fare. The cafe opens onto a lovely, hedge-enclosed private lawn where one can sit and enjoy the breeze from Biscayne Bay. The entire Tomas Maier collection of swimwear, cashmere knits, silk jersey pieces, pareos, and more will be available. In addition, there will be an eclectic assortment of the designer’s favorite objects, from sandals to flowers, books, CDs, scent, and jewelry. Designers and artists from around the world will host trunk shows at the boutique, bringing new and exciting ideas about style and living with them.
“Our goal is to offer our customers quality, extraordinary design, excellent service, and the best, hard-to-find objects from around the world,” explains Maier. “The Tomas Maier collection is about casual luxury, and the boutique is an extension of that idea. It’s about how you live in your time off.”
The Tomas Maier boutique will open in October, 2004.
